Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds rib eye steak (boneless rib), thinly sliced
  • ½ small pear, peeled and coarsely grated
  • ¼ cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon Gochujang (Korean red pepper paste)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds

Directions

  1. Prepare the Marinade:
    • In a bowl, combine the grated pear, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, and Gochujang. Mix well to create the marinade.
  2. Marinate the Beef:
    • Add the thinly sliced rib eye steak to the marinade. Toss to coat evenly.
    • Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or up to overnight) to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Cook the Bulgogi:
    • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.
    • Add the marinated beef slices and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
    • Remove from the pan and set aside.
  4. Serve and Garnish:
    • Arrange the cooked bulgogi on a serving platter.
    • Drizzle with the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
    • Sprinkle with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds.

Cook’s Note:

  • Serve the bulgogi with steamed rice, lettuce leaves (for wrapping), and a side of kimchi or pickled vegetables.
  • For a vegetarian version, use thinly sliced tofu or mushrooms instead of beef.
