Belgian Waffles are a delightful treat originating from Belgium as the name suggests. These waffles are known for their light and airy texture, crispy exterior, and deep pockets that hold delicious toppings. Unlike regular waffles, Belgian waffles are thicker and often larger due to their deeper grids. They’re perfect for drizzling with syrup, adding fresh fruit, or even a dollop of Nutella.

Directions:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Waffle Iron:
  • Preheat your Belgian waffle iron according to manufacturer instructions.
  1. Prepare the Batter:
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  1. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
  1. Cook the Waffles:
  • Once the waffle iron is heated, lightly grease it with non-stick cooking spray or melted butter.
  • Pour enough batter onto the center of the waffle iron to cover about 2/3 of the surface area.
  • Close the waffle iron and cook according to manufacturer instructions, typically 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  1. Serve and Enjoy:
  • Carefully remove the cooked waffle from the iron and place it on a plate.
  • Serve immediately with your favorite toppings such as syrup, fresh fruit, whipped cream, or even savory options like bacon and eggs.

Cook’s Note: If you’re out of all-purpose flour, you can substitute an equal amount of whole wheat flour or a gluten-free flour blend for a different texture and flavor profile.
